about

The Head Peddlers love to watch movies especially NOIR movies, and we also love instrumentals. We have a bunch of instrumental songs and weren’t sure where to place them, so we listened to them one after the other. While we were listening we couldn’t help seeing movies in our mind's eye, hence the idea to release them as an EP: "Music to Make Movies."

If you happen to hear this music and you make movies we hope you're inspired to consider a collaboration with us for the soundtrack or incidental music of your next film.

Since there are no words to the songs, we will tell you a little about each one.

"Ida" - During Hurricane Ida we recorded many sounds out the window on the LES of NYC including some wonderful sax that was just floating through the air, and the sounds of the storm itself. We were determined to put these recordings to good use. Karl felt something swinging was in order and came up with the music. Then Elizabeth came in with the clave and her multi-layered vocals, and voila, a song was born.

"December Surf #2" An alternate version of "December Surf Drums."

"November Color" is a twelve-minute, fourteen-second journey that began as the Head Peddlers were finishing up a night of recording in the studio. Having some minutes left on our time, Karl closed his eyes, relaxed his mind, and just played drums. Basically, it’s a meditation with no rhyme or reason. There's no structured tempo or preconceived idea, and we recommend that for everybody. When we listened back to the drum track we thought it would be a nice challenge to add some guitar and other sounds to it and see what happens. We loved how it came out, and we hope you agree it would be good in a movie. 😀

"Strolling on Avenue D" - Enough said!

"December Surf Drums" - This song evokes cold wind blowing icy mist on your back as you navigate a dark, dangerous route that you hope you survive. Theres hope in there and we are pulling for you. Elizabeth's vocals wrap you in warm dissonance that will carry you through.

"Bones Chime" came about when we isolated the drums and vocals of "December Surf," and we wanted to share what we heard. It reminded us of The Creatures. (Budgie is a major drumming influence on Karl.)

And there you have it. Thank you to all the people who show us love and support. The Head Peddlers will soon release another full album beginning with songs we had to leave out of our album "Big Mohair Sweater" when it started to get too long for vinyl. But for now we wanted to share with you these instrumentals that now have a home.

Enjoy,
Karl Bateman

Our eclectic repertoire of original songs grew rapidly. Every instrument on this record was played and all vocals were performed by the Head Peddlers. ... more
